Bunions: What Are They and What Can You Do About Them?

Bunions are common foot deformities that affect the joints of the forefoot. Although they can look complicated, understanding the basics can help you recognise the problem and know when to seek professional advice.

Hallux Valgus – the classic bunion

This is the bunion most people recognise. The big toe gradually changes position, often leaning towards the second toe, while the joint at the base of the big toe becomes more prominent.

Some bunions cause little or no pain, while others can lead to rubbing from footwear, corns, hard skin, pressure between the toes or, in some cases, arthritic changes within the joint.

Hallux Rigidus – a stiff big toe

Hallux rigidus is different. The big toe generally remains relatively straight, but the joint becomes enlarged and increasingly stiff. Movement may become painful or restricted, particularly when walking.

Tailor’s Bunion

A Tailor’s bunion affects the joint at the base of the little toe. Like a traditional bunion, it can become prominent and painful, particularly when footwear or ground pressure causes rubbing. Hard skin may also develop around the joint.

Why do bunions develop?

There is rarely one single cause. Bunions can develop through a combination of factors including foot structure, biomechanics, joint changes, muscle function, loading patterns and arthritis. Footwear can also contribute to symptoms by placing pressure on an already prominent joint.

What can you do?

Treatment depends on the individual and does not always mean surgery. Simple measures such as changing footwear, using appropriate padding, silicone devices or orthotics can sometimes significantly improve comfort and foot function.

If a bunion is painful, becoming increasingly difficult to manage, or you have diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems or another condition affecting healing, it is important to seek appropriate professional advice.

At Coastal Podiatry, we can assess your feet, discuss your symptoms and help you understand the options available — sometimes the right footwear and a little professional guidance can make a considerable difference.

If you have bunions, stiff big toe joints, or simply have concerns about your foot health, we are happy to help.
